When writer Tom Beller took his 11-year-old son to see Michael Jordan’s childhood home in Wilmington, he was a bit taken aback by how unassuming the comfortable two-story house was.

He had to check the address to make sure he was in the right place: 4647 Gordon Road.

After all, it isn’t a museum or a well-marked tour spot. It’s still a private home. The observation unknowingly echoed earlier discussions in the city about how to celebrate its favorite son. Beller explores why there’s not nearly as much to mark the NBA legend’s connection to his hometown as one might expect.
